Responses to my compositions
Excerpts from several reviews of the performance of my compositions and statements by Witold Lutosławski and Gennady Rozhdestvensky from their letters.
Orpheus Overwhelmed (1973)
The world premiere on 7.12.1973 in Washington D.C., followed by other performances.
Washington D.C., Star News:
„Mr Matousek Trio is a good piece, beautifully written for the instruments. The last of the four movements was especially moving. […] If the rest of his work is as good as this Trio, we should know about it.
Summit, N.J. and Vicinity, The Independent Preaas, Dec. 19, 1973, by Alfreda Hays:
“[…] a more interesting work than most avant garde music one hears.”
MiN Kaleidoskop (2002)
Hudební rozhledy 8/2002.
[...] interesting is the author's work with individual instrumental groups, which he treats as a whole.
Hudební rozhledy 2/2008.
[...] he apostrophes one of the greats of musical romanticism, acting decently, artfully with an eloquent result. Quotations and parodies as a principle that has had a place in composed music since time immemorial, naturally also have a position in Matoušek's work resulting from the author's thorough musical and historical training.
Sonata for Violin and Chabmer Orchestra (1980, 2003)
A tempo revue 2008.
In the orchestral version, I liked the piece much more than in the original version. [...] The palette of means of expression is enhanced by several microintervals in a solo instrument.
Viderunt omnes fines millenii (1999)
Hudební rozhledy 2/2000.
[...] the way in which Lukáš Matoušek was able to create a catchy and listener-attractive composition on a limited area is commendable.
Solo for Clarinet (2003)
Hudební rozhledy 5/2004, p. 15:
[...] the work fantastically open, yet excellently structured by the functional use of microintervals, with extraordinary demands on breath, intonation and dynamics, was mastered by Anna Ptáková quite masterfully.
Piano sonata (2014/17)
Život, Revue Umělecké besedy, 2021, Nr. 15, p. 146.
Matoušek's sonata represented for me the interpretative highlight of the evening.
Colors and thoughts (1976)
From a letter from Witold Lutoslawski 27. 12. 1978:
[…] Z przyjemnością wysłuchałem nagrań Pańskiego zespołu a w tym rówież Pańskiego utworu. Bardzo mi się podobał, gratuluję!
[...] I was pleased to listen to the recordings of your ensemble and also your composition. I liked it very much, congratulations!
Concerto for Percussion and Winds (1967)
From a letter from Gennady Rozhdestvensky 15. 9. 1979:
[…] I am sending you a program of the concert in the Beethoven Hall of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where on September 15th your wonderful Concerto for Wind and Percussion was performed. The public very warmly received your composition, which I was very, very happy about.
